Sounds like your taxes are used much better than ours.
Maybe I'll move to Australia, I already have a didgeridoo.

Jim,

Your idea sounds good in theory but it would never work for one main reason--The lawyer that a minimum wage worker would put up against the team of lawyers from any big corporation would be slaughtered 9 out of 10 times. I think your system would set up a lot of people to lose their bond when they can least afford it, even if they are justified in ther suit.

I have a relative who was blatently discriminated against because of her age, and fired (the hotel always fired employees 1-2 yrs before retirement age). When she got a lawyer, they were killed in court by the hotel's lawyers, including many fake documents they produced on the hotels behalf. She didn't have a chance.

Just my .02 cents. Cheers!

John

Ron, you could come on over here, we have pretty much the same system as PaulB in Australia. It's the best place in the world according the Human Development Report published by the United Nations! Here's a short quote from an article about it:

there are 413 doctors per 100,000 citizens, the average life expectancy is 78.4 years, and the Norwegians are even wealthier than ever before. The famous Nordic social welfare state remains efficient and provides the Norwegians with a first class health, education and benefits system, which is financed through their taxes.

Or read the whole thing here:

United Nations: Nordic Countries Best Place to Live in the World

Of course you have to learn how to plan the Hardager fiddle instead of the didgeridoo, and we require that you eat lutefisk and lefse for Christmas !

Thanks, Arnt. Sounds like something to consider. I hope lutefisk and lefse means turkey and dressing.

Yes Norway is now the "best country in the world to live", a claim Canada used to hold . When Canada was knocked out of that position one of the reasons was cut backs to our health care. Don't knock public Health care though, virtually every country has it, even the US. The difference is how deparate you have to be before you can take advantage of it. In the late 80's this became debated here in Canada Due to statements made during a US presidential Election about how Canada's system cost Canadians so much. The Statistics were collected and at least at that time in Canada, where we have universal health care, spent less taxpayers money on it per Capita than the US did. Why? Because if it is Universal people go to see the Doctor as soon as they think they may have a problem. According to the Article I read at that time, in countries without universal/Free health care many people would put it off untill they were really serious and by the time public health care kicked in for them things were really expensive. If you don't have free health care I say take out insurance. hopefully it will be a waste of money but if you ever need it you will be thankful. We take out house insurance but we don't hope that it will pay off. We hope we never have to use it. It has been interesting reading this and although the Canadians have been saying we arn't ofended by the coments that is because we are so polite.   Of course we feel a little offended when people critisize our health care (aparently our universal health care is the thing that Canadians value the most) but hey, we're Canadians, we always feel offended we just never say so. Thats the second major thing we value, being so Darn nice Now I will be a true Canadian and apologise to everyone I might have ofended in my above tirade.

Wow, what a discussion! Sounds like there are no easy answers when it comes to health care.
